Superb product, simple to use, works great, no fuss handling, can't say enough about it. April 3, 2010 L Tong (Roswell, GA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Pour in the coals, light the newspaper crumpled below it and that's it! No more building coal pyramids, and seeing it all fall down when the grill shakes a little. No more using lighter fluid or other kinds of starter.
Like it for the ease of use above. Easy to use handle means you can grip it w/o need for thick gloves. Easy to pour hot coals out. Convenient space underneath to store the newspaper. Doesn't corrode and looks great for it.
Besides that, it's just environmentally friendly. Not just cause it gets rid of need for lighter fluid, but that it makes using a coal grill so user-friendly. The coal briquets are just compacted leftover wood chips from some factory process and would've bio-degraded anyway. Converting and using it as fuel means no introduction of new carbon into the atmosphere, something that propane fuel does. Sure propane burns cleaner, but it's formerly trapped carbon that now goes into the air. Briquets are no more different than burning a tree branch that fell on the ground, which in a way is where it came from.
One other tip - I store leftover bacon oil in an old food can where it solidifies which makes for easy storage. I then smear some across the newspaper I'll use to light the chimney starter. The oil burns nice and slow, and helps keep the fire going till the briquets take over.

I must have been living in a cave because I just learned about this device. The hassle of starting charcoal - newspaper, starter fluid, paraffin squares - are GONE. The lingering taste of starter fluid in grilled meat - GONE. This gadget works incredibly well. I place 2 sheets of crumpled up newspaper in the bottom, add charcoal to the top chamber, then light the paper. After 10 minutes, it's a glowing inferno and the briquets are ready.
CAUTION! Wear a welders glove though - the handle can get hot, and flames shoot out the top and bottom when you dump out the coals.
A must have for Charcoal users October 2, 2008 Robert E. Terry II (South Florida, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product saves time, money, and eliminates lighter fluid taste. I get 4-5 years out of each one I purchase, and I grill heavily year round in Florida. I save a tremendous amount of money not having to purchase lighter fluid. It gets coals ready much faster and more thoroughly than lighter fluid, and leaves no aftertaste. You can start full baskets for large grills, or fill it less for smaller grills. Uses only newspaper. I have tried cheaper no name chimneys, but have always been disappointed. This is a much higher quality product than any equivalent product I have seen. You owe it to yourself to get one!
Three years later--still works great April 16, 2009 R. Chittenden 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Follow the directions. Two full sheets of newspaper get the charcoal started every time. This is much more reliable than using starter fluids and the coals heat evenly. Set the chimney directly on the grill's coal grate and make sure your vents below are open to help create updraft. A butane lighter designed for candle lighting, etc. works well to light the paper. The flame will be drawn into the slots at the bottom of the chimney by the updraft. This is very smokey at the outset so make sure your nearby windows and doors are closed to avoid smoke drifing into the house. Pouring the coals can be a little sparky and you may want a grilling glove if your chimney fire is burning fiercely.
First Time User - Chimney Starter January 25, 2010 "Laurie, not Lori" (Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'd been on a mission for a new electric charcoal starter, backed up and read the reviews for this one from Weber. It seemed very simplistic and very functional, so I bought one. I have to say that this chimney starter is truly amazing! I wasn't thrilled with the amount of smoke generated from the smoldering newspaper in the first 5-10 minutes, but beyond that, the charcoals heated quickly and within about 15 minutes, the charcoals were ready to go. We cooked two thick steaks on it and it was fantastic! I liked the electric starter because it was clean and simple, but this starter is terrific, too! Get beyond the smokiness of the start, the heating of the charcoal is fast and consistent. Once the coals on the top were ashen, they were ready to roll. Dumped them into the kettle grill and within minutes, we were ready to cook steaks on the grill. I have nothing to say beyond the simple fact that the steaks were delicious and it's because the grill was perfect for cooking steaks!
Great "idiot-proof" charcoal starter that's very effective! I can't believe I wasted so much time on an "artificial" starter!
